Internships and Scholarship Information

Upper-level labor studies and employment relations majors are encouraged to apply for internships, which typically carry 3 credit hours. Students must submit a description of the internship to a faculty advisor or to the director of the undergraduate program.

Masters of Labor and Employment Relations

Approval will be contingent on the suitability of the internship and whether the student has maintained an acceptable academic record in labor studies courses.

Scholarships:

Eduardo Diaz Scholarship:Eduardo Diaz earned a master’s degree in Labor Studies at Rutgers University. He began his union organizing career while still a masters student by assisting an organizing drive at the Hyatt hotel in New Brunswick. At the time of his death in the year 2000, he was Internal Affairs Director for the Communications Workers of America.

Each year, CWA Local 1034 grants one semester ($1,500), one year ($3,000), and two-year ($6,000, total) scholarship to declared Labor Studies majors at Rutgers University. Additionally, the recipients may participate in a paid internship at Local 1034’s office in Trenton during the Summer. (The internship is currently paid at $10.00 per hour).

  • Declared as a Labor Studies Major
  • Have at least one more semester to go as a Rutgers
    undergraduate as of September, 2007.

ANTHONY ZUCCARELLO SCHOLARSHIP: The late Anthony S. Zuccarello was a labor organizer throughout his adult life. Because he believed that his union must be an engine of social change, he was a political activist. Because he believed he was his “brother’s keeper,” he was generous to every person he knew.

If you are a full-time Labor Studies major, you are invited to apply for the Anthony
Zuccarello scholarship. The scholarship will pay $1,500.00 for the academic year
2007-2008.

Eligibility: In order to be eligible for the scholarship award, a student must:

  • Be a new or continuing student in the Undergraduate Labor Studies Program for the current academic year.
  • Be a full-time student who is currently registered for at least twelve (12) credits.
  • Have not received a full tuition scholarship from another source.
  • Have had work experience with a labor union. “Work experience” includes volunteer work or an internship, as well as being “on staff.”
