Bachelor of Arts in Labor Studies and Employment Relations

We Study Work, We Value Justice

Learning Objectives

Our goal is for students completing the labor studies major to be able to demonstrate

an understanding of fundamental social science, historical, and legal perspectives, theories, and concepts relating to work, employment relations, and worker movements.

  • An ability to apply those concepts to understanding
    • employment relations in the United States and other nations now operating in a global framework.
    • social and professional life, community participation, and citizenship activities (including such issues as collective action, diversity, ethics, workplace fairness, workers’ and human rights, organizational effectiveness, gender parity, full employment, and decent work)

  • Knowledge of the U.S. labor movement, and the fundamental laws/institutions governing employment relations including recognition of their distinctive nature and their historical evolution.
    • An understanding of the key comparative similarities and differences in these institutions across nations

  • Proficiency in gathering and using evidence to study work and employment relations.
    • Understanding of basic quantitative concepts and tools of analysis common in employment settings.
    • Information literacy in using online sources of information and written documents.
    • Ability to identify and evaluate arguments in texts.

  • The ability to assess and criticize academic research findings and theories, including the ability to make an argument using historical and contemporary evidence.
  • Proficiency in written and oral communication in varied settings.
  • Understanding and respect for the perspective of people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • The capacity to work productively in teams, in social networks, and on an individual basis.
