NJ Transit reduced overtime in 2020 but some still doubled their salaries

Safety system costs NJ Transit $300 million plus.

For the first time in 5 years, NJ Transit reduced its overtime budget last year compared to the year before, despite having to install and test a federally mandated safety system called positive train control to meet a Dec. 31, 2020 deadline.

Overtime was reduced by $13.94 million in 2020, from $196.9 million in 2019 to $183 million last year, said Nancy Snyder an NJ Transit spokeswoman. NJ Transit overtime had steadily increased from $138.9 million in 2015 to $181.5 million in 2018.
