Distinguished Professor Randall Schuler Retiring

Distinguished Professor Randall S. Schuler is retiring at the end of June after two decades of service to the Rutgers School of Management and Labor Relations.

“Randall has been an extraordinary member of our Department of Human Resource Management,” Dean Adrienne Eaton said. “Through his scholarship and teaching, he has been a leading voice in the fields of global talent management, strategic human resource management, and international human resource management, while also making significant contributions to understanding the role of human resource management in innovation and in the conduct of mergers and acquisitions.”

Schuler is an elected Fellow of the Academy of Management, the British Academy of Management, and the American Psychological Association. He is among the most highly cited management scholars of the past 30 years, according to the results of Scholarly Impact by Philip M. Podsakoff, et al (2008) and Scholarly Impact Revisited by Herman Aguinis, et al (2012).

During his esteemed career, Schuler has authored or edited more than 45 books, contributed more than 60 chapters to books of readings, and published more than 100 articles in professional journals and academic proceedings. Notably, his textbook Managing Human Resources (Oxford University Press) has provided a strong foundation for our Master of Human Resource Management (MHRM) students, as well as students at many other schools around the world.

Schuler’s research has appeared in most of the leading management publications, and his professional service activities include being a member of 30 Editorial Review Boards for journals that include the Academy of Management JournalAcademy of Management ReviewOrganizational Science, and Human Resource Management (for 20 years).

He is past Consulting Editor for the Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology, past Editor of the Human Resource Planning Journal, past Area Editor of the Journal of World Business, past Co-Editor of the Journal of Operations Management, and past Chief Consulting Editor of the European Journal of International Management.  Today he continues to serve on several journal boards and also serves as Founding Co-Editor of the book series titled Global Human Resource Management.  Published by Routledge, the Global HRM series now includes 30 books that have given voice to more than 300 scholars from all around the world.

Since joining the SMLR faculty in 1998, Schuler has held several leadership positions including director of the MHRM program (2001-2003), founder and director of the Center for Global Strategic Human Resource Management (1998-2001), and overseas credit program director (1998-1999).
